Some will see a sudden change of luck. A new road. Why? Because Zeus burns in the very heart of the Sun. The Buck Moon rises with Plouton at her shoulder. And sixteen days from now, the sky goes dark. Some full moons pass over us like weather. This one arrives like a verdict. This is prelude for the Season of Eclipses. Yet this Last Full Moon before the Eclipse has so much more to tell us, only few hours after the very important change of the Nodes of Fate – which affects the same 4 Zodiac Signs, and of course the beginning of the retrograde phase of Saturn.
The Buck Moon in Aquarius: The Lion, the Cupbearer, and the Last Full Moon Before the Eclipse
Tonight’s Buck Moon, the July full moon, named for the season when the stags push new antlers through velvet, reaches perfect opposition at 6°30′ Aquarius on Wednesday 29 July 2026. It is the last full moon standing between us and the total solar eclipse of 12 August. It is also the single most loaded lunation of the summer, and the reason is written plainly in the ephemeris: the Sun and Jupiter are fused at the same degree of Leo, facing Pluto across the sky, with the buck Moon sitting directly on Pluto’s shoulder.
When the Buck Moon peaks
The Buck Moon will be visibly full to the eye from the evening of the 28th through the evening of the 30th, rising at sunset and setting at sunrise. Its working influence runs roughly 27 July to 2 August, and the effects sharpen for anyone with planets or angles between 4° and 9° of the fixed signs – Taurus, Leo, Scorpio and Aquarius.
The Lion of Nemea and the Cup-Bearer of Olympus
The Leo–Aquarius axis is not an abstraction. In the Hellenic sky it is two of the oldest stories we have, set opposite each other and made to look at one another once a year.
Leo is the Nemean Lion, the beast whose hide no blade could cut, set in the stars after Herakles finally strangled it with his bare arms in the mouth of a cave. It is the constellation of a power so absolute it could only be undone by something more stubborn than itself. Leo does not ask permission. Leo does not share the kill.
Aquarius is Ganymede, the Hydrochoos, the Water-Pourer. A Trojan prince, the most beautiful of mortals, seized by Zeus in eagle form and carried to Olympus to pour the nectar for the gods. He was given immortality and a place in the sky, and in exchange, he pours. Forever. For everyone. His entire cosmic function is service to the collective.
So tonight the sky sets one against the other. The Lion says this is mine, I took it, I hold it. The Cup-Bearer says it was never yours to hold, only to pour. And there is a devastating irony sitting on top of it: Zeus himself is cazimi in Leo, the god who abducted Ganymede stands at the very heart of the light, in the sign of the Lion, staring across at the boy he took.
Pagan Astrology
This lunation asks the oldest Hellenic question there is: how much is enough? The Greeks had a word for the crime of forgetting – hubris – and a word for the correction that follows it: nemesis. Note that the Lion’s own home, Nemea, shares a root with her name. Both come from némein, to apportion, to give each its due share. The Nemean Lion is, etymologically, the beast of the allotted portion. That is precisely what a Jupiter–Pluto opposition tests: whether you know your share.
IV · Four forces driving this Moon
1. Zeus in the heart of the Sun
Jupiter sits four arcminutes from exact conjunction with the Sun. This is cazimi, from the Arabic kaṣmīmī, rendering the Greek en kardíāi, “in the heart.” Traditional astrology holds that a planet burnt by proximity to the Sun is weakened, but a planet in the heart itself is enthroned. Jupiter is not damaged here; Jupiter is crowned, in a fire sign, once a year, and this year it happens two hours before a full buck moon. Whatever Jupiter governs in your chart, growth, faith, foreign things, the law, the teacher, the gift, receives an invisible coronation today. You will not see it. You will feel the consequences within the fortnight.
2. The Moon on Plouton
The Moon perfects two degrees from Pluto, retrograde in Aquarius. In Greek terms this is the Moon walking into the house of Plouton, and remember that Plouton is not merely lord of the dead. His name comes from ploûtos: wealth. He is the god of what lies buried, and the ancients understood perfectly that the same earth holds both the corpse and the gold. A Buck Moon on Pluto brings buried feeling to the surface with no anaesthetic. It also brings buried resources. Both, tonight, at once.
3. The hidden Mars–Pluto opposition
This one does not appear on the zodiac wheel, and most forecasts will miss it entirely. Mars stands at 23°13′ north declination; Pluto at 23°21′ south. That is a contraparallel with an orb of eight arcminutes, a concealed Mars–Pluto opposition, and an unusually exact one. It supplies the hard edge under an otherwise glittering chart: coercion, pressure applied from below, upheaval that comes up through the floor rather than down from the ceiling. It also supplies extraordinary survival capacity to anyone who knows they are carrying it. The Moon, meanwhile, is contraparallel Uranus by nineteen arcminutes, emotional reversals arriving faster than they can be processed.
4. The way out: Uranus and Neptune
Nothing here is sealed. Uranus at 4°55′ Gemini sextiles the Sun and Jupiter and trines the Moon and Pluto. Neptune at 4°17′ Aries trines the Sun and Jupiter and sextiles both Pluto and Uranus. Every pressurised point in this chart has an escape valve attached, but every one of them opens sideways. The solutions that work over the next fortnight will be ones nobody scheduled. They arrive through the wrong door, via the wrong person, at an hour you had earmarked for something else. Mercury, now direct through Cancer, helps unstick conversations that had gone silent.
5. Venus square Mars, exact to seven minutes
Venus at 21°33′ Virgo squares Mars at 21°26′ Gemini, as close to perfect as an aspect gets. Desire arrives, but braided with impatience and a peculiar sense of being held to ransom by your own wanting. Venus in Virgo has one question and asks it relentlessly: is this actually useful to you, or does it merely occupy you? This square lands on the third decan of the mutable signs, degrees 19° to 24° of Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius and Pisces.
Why this is the last ordinary moon
Three days ago, on 26–27 July, the Lunar Nodes crossed onto the Aquarius–Leo axis for the first time in roughly nineteen years. The North Node now stands at 29°51′ Aquarius; the South Node opposite it in Leo. On the same day Saturn stationed retrograde at 14°44′ Aries. Athens was, by the old Attic reckoning, in the opening days of Hekatombaion, the season of the Kronia, the festival where masters and slaves ate at one table and the ordinary hierarchy was suspended for a day.
That is not a coincidence you have to believe in to find useful. The nodal axis has just moved into the exact signs that govern the one and the many, and the last time the Athenians marked this moment they did it by dissolving rank for twenty-four hours.
Then, on 12 August 2026, the New Moon at approximately 20° Leo becomes a total solar eclipse, the first solar eclipse to fall on this newly activated axis. Totality crosses Greenland, Iceland and northern Spain; a deep partial eclipse will be visible across most of Europe, Greece included. A partial lunar eclipse in Pisces follows on 28 August and closes the season.
What to do with thatThis Buck Moon is your last clear-sighted lunation before the gates open. Eclipses conceal more than they reveal; decisions made under them tend to look different in six months. Whatever you can see clearly now, act on now. After 12 August the light goes strange for a while.
Predictions for the World
Jupiter opposite Pluto across Leo–Aquarius is, historically, the signature of large capital: concentration of wealth, enormous investment, resources changing hands at speed, and people rising very high and falling very hard on the same bend of the road. With the Moon sitting on Pluto and the Sun crowning Jupiter, that mechanism is not in the background of this chart. It is the chart.
Money and markets

The Cup of Ganymede
Aquarius pours. Plouton receives. The correct offering for a Moon in this condition is not a candle but a libation, and the Greeks were exact about which one. For the chthonic powers and the beloved dead, the offering was melíkraton: honey mixed with water, poured onto the ground. Odysseus pours it first at the edge of the underworld in Book XI. It is one of the oldest surviving rites in the Hellenic record, and it costs almost nothing.

- Leave the vessel empty overnight, mouth upward, where the moonlight falls. Wash it in the morning with cold water and salt. Keep it for the eclipse on 12 August, when you will use it again.
If you want to add one thing, add a pinch of barley scattered before you pour, oulochýtai, the barley grains cast before every Homeric offering. If you want to add nothing, add nothing. The rite works on the strength of the fourth step, and everything else is courtesy.

Why is it called the Buck Moon?
The July full buck moon takes its common English name from the season when male deer grow their new antlers, pushing through the velvet in midsummer. It is also recorded as the Thunder Moon and the Hay Moon. In the old Attic calendar this lunation falls in Hekatombaion, the first month of the Athenian year, whose festivals opened with the Kronia.
Is this Buck Moon a supermoon?
No. The Moon is near average distance at this lunation, and its apparent disc is fractionally smaller than the Sun’s. Its force here is astrological rather than visual, the aspects are what make it exceptional, not the size.
What does “cazimi” actually mean?
It describes a planet within roughly seventeen arcminutes of exact conjunction with the Sun, in the heart of the Sun rather than merely near it. A planet close to the Sun is normally considered burnt and weakened; a planet cazimi is considered honoured and enthroned. Jupiter is four arcminutes from exact here, which is about as clean a cazimi as the ephemeris produces.
Which degrees are most affected in my own chart?
