Tonight, on total solar eclipse in the sign of the Lion, falling thirteen arcminutes from a star the Greeks steered their ships by, and which Hera swore would never be allowed to rest.
Solar Eclipse: The Black Sun and the Star That Never Sets
For two minutes and eighteen seconds tomorrow evening, the Sun will go out. Not dim – out. The Moon’s shadow will begin in the far Arctic, sweep down across eastern Greenland and western Iceland, race across the North Atlantic and come ashore in northern Spain with the Sun already low and red on the horizon, dying twice at once. Fifteen million people stand inside that shadow. Around nine hundred and eighty million more, roughly one person in eight alive, will see the Sun bitten into somewhere across Europe, north-west Africa, and the top of North America.
This is mainland Europe’s first total solar eclipse since 1999. And in the sky’s own language it is something rarer still: the Sun is extinguished in Leo, the one sign the Sun rules, the sign of the heart and the crown and the visible self. The light is put out in its own house.
Every astrologer alive has had this date circled for years. But almost nobody is talking about the thing that makes it strange – the star it lands on.
The eclipse falls at 20°01′ of Leo. Thirteen arcminutes away sits Merak, a star of the Great Bear: the constellation that, alone in the northern sky, never sets.
Thirteen arcminutes is a fifth of a degree. In fixed-star work that is not “near.” That is on top of. And it means the sky is doing something almost theatrical: on the night the light that governs everything is snuffed out, that darkness is laid precisely against the one light in the northern heavens that has never, in all of Greek memory, gone down into the sea.

What is actually happening on Solar Eclipse
The New Moon becomes exact at 17:45 UT on Wednesday 12 August 2026 – 20:45 in Athens, 18:45 in London, 1:45 pm in New York, 10:45 am in Los Angeles. At that moment Sun and Moon stand together at 20°01′ Leo.
So for how long does this influence us? Remember! A solar eclipse is a New Moon with the volume turned up and the clock extended. An ordinary New Moon spends itself in four weeks. An eclipse runs for roughly six months – this one until the solar eclipse of 6 February 2027 – and it does not so much begin things as rearrange them. Doors that were shut open. Doors you assumed were permanent close without discussion.
Three details give this particular eclipse its character.
It is a South Node eclipse
The lunar nodes changed axis on 26 July 2026, moving into Aquarius and Leo. That puts the South Node, the Tail of the Dragon, Καταβιβάζων, the descending point, in Leo, and this eclipse falls on the same side. South Node eclipses subtract. They are not the launch; they are the clearing of the site. Something in how you have been performing yourself, seeking applause, holding the stage, or carrying an old inherited pride is being taken out of your hands. What you build afterwards belongs to the Aquarian side: the collective, the network, the future that is not centred on you.
Leo is crowded: Sun, Moon, Mercury and Jupiter are all in Leo. Jupiter has been in the Lion since 30 June and sits around 9°, it does not conjoin the eclipse, but it enlarges the whole sign. Everything to do with courage, display, romance, creative work and children is running loud this season, which is exactly why the blackout lands hard. You cannot dim a room that was already dark.
The rest of the sky is a beautiful trap: Away from Leo, an air grand trine links Venus in Libra, Uranus in Gemini and Pluto in Aquarius, and Mercury and Venus lock into the wider Uranus–Neptune–Pluto configuration to build a strikingly symmetrical pattern of two oppositions wrapped in easy blue aspects. The oppositions, Mercury against Pluto, Venus against Neptune, carry genuine tension: information warfare, obsessive conviction, propaganda, and separately, wishful thinking, over-idealisation and financial fog. The harmonious aspects around them don’t resolve that tension. Things look calm. Things are not calm.
The eclipse makes a wide trine to Saturn retrograde at about 14° Aries, too loose, honestly, to lean on, though it means Aries-flavoured discipline is the nearest thing to a support beam in this chart. And Uranus in Gemini is the one planet in that whole structure receiving only easy aspects. It sits at the apex like the ridge of a roof. Whatever breaks loose in the next six months will release through Uranian channels: technology and AI, electricity and the grid, aviation, sudden reversals, protest, invention, and the ungovernable speed of information.
The star the eclipse lands on
Learn the Star than never sets: β Ursae Majoris · 19°48′ Leo
Fixed stars work by proximity, and the orbs are unforgiving, a degree, sometimes less. Most eclipses land on nothing in particular. This one lands on a bullseye. Three stars occupy this stretch of the Lion. The eclipse threads directly between two of them. A scale showing 18 to 22 degrees of Leo. Alterf sits at 18 degrees 13 minutes, Merak at 19 degrees 48 minutes, the solar eclipse at 20 degrees 01 minutes, and Algenubi at 21 degrees 04 minutes.

Algenubi (ε Leonis, 21°04′) is the southern star of the Lion’s head – al-ra’s al-asad al-janubi – and Robson records it under the name “He Who Rends.” Saturn and Mars in nature: bold, bombastic, capable of cruelty, but carrying real artistic feeling and formidable power of expression. It is a degree past the eclipse, still inside orb, still contributing.
Alterf (λ Leonis, 18°13′) is the Glance – the Lion’s gaze. It sits just outside conjunction, but its presence is a nice piece of poetry for an eclipse about being looked at.
And between them, close enough to be touching, is Merak.
Merak is not a Leo star at all
This is what makes the eclipse unusual. Merak’s name comes from Arabic al-maraqq, the loin or flank – but the flank of what? Not the Lion! Merak belongs to Ursa Major, the Great Bear. Along with Dubhe it forms the two Pointers: the pair of stars at the lip of the Plough that, extended in a straight line, deliver you to Polaris and therefore to true north.
A Star for navigators, for herders, for anyone lost after dark for the last four thousand years… is to tell you which way is north when you cannot see where you are.
That is a startlingly precise symbol for an eclipse. The Sun, the thing you normally orient by, is removed. And the sky replaces it, in the same instant, in the same degree, with the star that exists to give bearings in the dark. The seven stars of the Plough. A dashed line runs from Merak through Dubhe and continues to Polaris, the pole star.
Merak and Dubhe are the Pointers. Follow them and you arrive at Polaris, the one fixed point in a turning sky.
The Greeks called Ursa Major Ἄρκτος, the Bear, but in daily speech she was Ἅμαξα, the Wain: the ox-cart. Homer names her both ways in the same breath, on the shield Hephaistos forges for Achilles and again when Odysseus sails alone from Kalypso’s island. And in both passages Homer adds the same strange detail. She turns in her place. She watches Orion. And she alone has no share in the baths of Ocean.

Now put the pieces together for thisz` evening.
The Sun is extinguished in the sign it rules, in the same degree as the star of a bear who is not permitted to set, while Zeus himself, as Jupiter, stands nine degrees behind in the Lion, and the nymph he ruined burns overhead because his wife would not let her rest.
You could not construct that on purpose. It is simply what is in the sky on 12 August 2026.
And it gives the eclipse its actual instruction, which is not the one you will read elsewhere. This is not a lunation for setting bright intentions, most traditional astrologers advise against petitioning an eclipse at all, and the Greek folk instinct agrees: you do not ask for things while the light is being eaten. It is a lunation for a harder question. When the thing you have been navigating by goes out, the role, the recognition, the person, the version of yourself that everyone applauded… what do you steer by instead?

Who is favoured, who is under pressure
First, the rule that overrides sign: this eclipse contacts anyone with a planet or angle between roughly 15° and 25° of the fixed signs, Leo, Aquarius, Taurus, Scorpio. Predictions for the world
Classical mundane astrology treats eclipses as the loudest signals in the sky, the traditional phrase is that they announce the fate of kings and peoples. Two rules govern the reading. The sign and degree tell you the subject matter and the territories involved. The path of visibility tells you where the effects concentrate. What follows is how that tradition reads this chart, offered as symbolism to think with rather than as prophecy.
The shadow’s own path is the first answer: Totality crosses Arctic Siberia, eastern Greenland, western Iceland, the North Atlantic, northern Spain and the north-eastern corner of Portugal. Traditional practice puts the heaviest weight on the land the umbra actually touches. Mercury against Pluto: the information war. The most polarising aspect in the chart. Propaganda, leaks, surveillance, coercive messaging, and the deliberate weaponising of narrative. The eclipse phase extends to the solar eclipse of 6 February 2027, reinforced by the partial lunar eclipse on 28 August 2026 at the close of this eclipse season. Classical technique also holds that the eclipse degree stays live: whenever a planet later crosses, squares or opposes 20° of the fixed signs, the story resurfaces. Before you look up
There is no safe way to look at a partially eclipsed Sun with the naked eye, through sunglasses, through smoked glass, or through a phone camera. You need filters certified to ISO 12312-2, and you need them for the entire partial phase, which for most of Europe is the whole event.
The single exception is totality itself. Inside the narrow path across Greenland, Iceland, northern Spain and north-eastern Portugal, during the two minutes and eighteen seconds when shadow covers the solar disc, the corona can be viewed directly. The instant the first sliver of Sun returns, the filters go back on. Everywhere else on Earth, they never come off.
In Spain the eclipse happens with the Sun very low in the west, so you will need a clear westward horizon, and the low Sun does not make it any safer to look at unfiltered.
Greek folk practice for the night of 12 August
So, Greek folk custom around eclipses is consistent and old: when the light dissapears, you cover things. Wells were covered. Water jars, flour, bread and wine were covered or brought indoors, so that the spoiled light would not fall on what the household would later eat and drink. You did not petition, you did not begin work, and you did not stand about admiring it. You waited, and when the light came back you uncovered what you had hidden.
This rite keeps that instinct and joins it to the star the eclipse falls on. It costs nothing and needs no tools you do not already have.
