It is also, and this matters, the last eclipse of summer 2026 – and very nearly the last of an era. This is the sixth eclipse in a seven-part series running along the Virgo–Pisces axis that began in September 2024 and closes in February 2027. Three Things That Make This Lunar Eclipse Unusual
Most eclipse articles will tell you that Pisces means letting go. That is true and it is also nearly useless, because it is true of every Pisces Full Moon that has ever occurred. What makes this one distinct is the company it keeps. Three configurations do the real work here, and each one has a long pedigree in traditional practice.
- Mercury is cazimi: in the heart of the eclipsed Sun
On 27 August, at 17:03 UTC – just eleven hours before the eclipse peaks – Mercury comes to exact conjunction with the Sun at 4° Virgo. This is cazimi, from the Arabic kaṣmīmī, itself rendering the Greek en kardíā: “in the heart.” The old texts are unusually emphatic about this condition. A planet burned by proximity to the Sun is combust, weakened, hidden, unable to act. But a planet drawn all the way into the Sun’s heart – within a degree of exactitude – is not burned. It is enthroned. It is the counsellor admitted to the king’s private chamber.
And Mercury is doing this in Virgo, the only sign where it holds both domicile and exaltation at once. There is nowhere in the zodiac Mercury would rather be. So the Sun that is being opposed and eclipsed by this Moon has, sitting inside it, the strongest possible version of the planet of speech, calculation, documents, messages and diagnosis. The eclipse degree itself, 4°54′ Virgo, falls in Mercury’s own bounds in the Egyptian terms – and the Moon’s degree, 4°54′ Pisces, falls in the bounds of Venus.
This is the single most hopeful thing in the chart, and it should not be skipped over. An eclipse whose degrees are held by Mercury and Venus – the two planets least inclined to do harm – as an eclipse with mitigation built into its foundations. Something is being taken away, yes. But it is being taken away by an intelligence that knows exactly what it is doing, and something articulate is being handed back in exchange. Expect the truth of a situation to arrive in words: a document, a test result, a message you have been half-expecting, a sentence someone finally says out loud. - Uranus is standing perfectly still. It stations retrograde on 10 September. For the whole of this eclipse it is, to any practical measure, motionless: a planet stopped dead in the sky, less than a degree from an exact square to both the eclipsed Moon and the cazimi Sun. - Both malefics are in fall and squaring each other
This is a nocturnal chart. The Moon is the sect light, the luminary that governs a night chart and it is the Moon that is being extinguished. According to the ancient doctrine, that alone is worth pausing on: the ruling light of the night is the one going dark. Under those conditions the traditional astrologer looks immediately to two things. First, where is the benefic? Two malefics, both stripped of dignity, both unable to operate in the mode that suits them, locked in a hard aspect. - The saving grace is that Jupiter, at 12°54′ Leo, holds an almost exact trine to Saturn and Jupiter is the traditional ruler of Pisces, which makes it the ruler of this entire eclipse. The lord of the eclipse is in a fire sign, in the Sun’s own domicile, in flowing aspect to the planet of consequence. Translation: the difficulty is real, the frustration is real, and there is nevertheless a legitimate, generous, and reasonably well-lit way through it. You will have to ask for it. - One last note, and it is a poignant one. Neptune has left Pisces. For fourteen years the modern ruler of the Fishes sat in its own sign, and every Pisces eclipse of that era had Neptune at home to receive it. Neptune is now at 3°45′ Aries, retrograde, and this Pisces Moon is eclipsed without it. Whatever this eclipse dissolves, it dissolves without the anaesthetic. What to Do on the Night
Traditional practice is almost unanimous on one point, and it is worth stating before anything else: an eclipse is not a good time to begin things. The old texts treat an eclipsed luminary as a light in a compromised condition, and starting a venture under a compromised light was considered poor judgement.
