Twenty days, one sign, two retrograde planets and a pair of direct stations on the same day. The final Mercury retrograde of 2026 is not about missed emails. It is about what has been buried – and what is coming back up. Welcome to the final Mercury Retrograde of 2026.
final Mercury Retrograde of 2026: October 24 – November 13. Hermes Descends Into the Underworld – and Venus Walks Beside Him
As always, lets start with some magical background. The Greeks never imagined Hermes as a god who stayed in one place. He was the runner between worlds – messenger of Olympus, patron of the road, the crossroads and the marketplace, and, in his most solemn role, Psychopompós, the guide who walks the souls of the dead down into Hades. Every few months the planet that carries his name appears to stop in the sky and walk backward. This morning, Saturday, October 24, 2026, it did exactly that, at nearly 21° of Scorpio – the most chthonic sign of the zodiac.
This is the third Mercury retrograde of the year, and like the two before it (in Pisces in late winter and in Cancer in early summer), it unfolds in a water sign. But this one has a feature the others lacked: Mercury never leaves Scorpio. It turns at 20°59′, walks back to 5°02′, and stations direct on Friday, November 13 without ever crossing a sign boundary. No relief of a change of element, no second act in a neighbouring sign. Just one long, undivided descent into the house of Ares.
And Hermes is not travelling alone. Venus has been retrograde since October 3, having turned in Scorpio herself. She met the Sun in her own underworld conjunction in the early hours of October 24 (UTC), roughly three and a half hours before Mercury stationed. Then – in a rare piece of celestial choreography – both planets turn direct within hours of each other on November 13–14. Two of the personal planets, the gods of speech and of desire, are reviewing the same territory at the same time. Whatever you have been saying, and whatever you have been wanting, is up for a second reading.

The Calendar of the Descent
- October 4: Mercury enters the pre-retrograde shadow at 5° Scorpio. Anything that began after this date is likely to be revised.
- October 15: Pluto stations direct at 3° Aquarius, the same degree Mercury will square when it turns direct.
- October 24: Venus meets the Sun at 0°45′ Scorpio (03:44 UTC). Mercury stations retrograde at 20°59′ Scorpio (07:12 UTC).
- October 25: Retrograde Venus backs out of Scorpio and returns to Libra.
- October 26: Full Hunter’s Moon at 2°46′ Taurus, exactly squared by Pluto. The Scorpio–Taurus axis of shared versus owned is lit from both ends.
- October 30: Mercury squares Mars in Leo — the sharpest day for arguments, rash messages and power struggles.
- November 4: Mercury cazimi at ~12° Scorpio, on a Wednesday – Mercury’s own day. The still point and reset of the whole cycle.
- November 9: New Moon at 16° Scorpio while Mercury is still retrograde in the same sign.
- November 13: Mercury stations direct at 5°02′ Scorpio, square Pluto. Venus follows within hours, turning direct at 22°52′ Libra.
- November 15: Mars conjoins Jupiter in Leo – the decisions held back during the retrograde want to move.
- November 29–30: Mercury clears the shadow. Only now is the cycle truly finished.
Hermes in the House of Ares
Strip away the pop-astrology shorthand and look at this retrograde the way a Hellenistic astrologer would, and it becomes much more specific than “communication goes wrong.”
A guest without a seat at the table
Mercury has no essential dignity in Scorpio. It is not the domicile lord (that is Mars), it is not exalted here, and it does not rule the water triplicity (Venus, Mars and the Moon share that). In the old language, Mercury is a guest in another god’s house, and a guest must play by the host’s rules. In Scorpio, the host is Ares: the god of the sword, the wound, the confrontation and the secret kept under pressure. Hermes, who normally talks his way out of anything, finds himself in a house where words are weighed like weapons.
The rulership chain: a loop between Sun and Mars
Follow the chain of rulership and something elegant appears. Mercury in Scorpio answers to Mars. Mars is in Leo, so it answers to the Sun. The Sun is in Scorpio, so it answers back to Mars. The Sun and Mars are in mutual reception – each standing in the other’s domicile – and that closed loop is the final authority over this entire retrograde. In plain terms: everything Mercury revisits will ultimately be judged by two questions. Who holds the power? (the Sun) and Who is willing to fight for it? (Mars).
The journey through the bounds and faces
The degrees Mercury walks are not neutral ground. Using the Egyptian bounds and the Chaldean faces, the retrograde becomes a three-stage passage:
- 20°59′ — The Turning: Bounds of Jupiter, face of Venus. Mercury stops among the benefics — just as Venus herself is retrograde.
- ~12° — The Cazimi: Mercury’s own bounds, face of the Sun. Hermes is reborn in the heart of the Sun, on his own ground.
- 5°02′ — The Station Direct: Bounds of Mars, face of Mars. The descent ends at the most Martial point of the sign.
Read as a story: the retrograde opens on soft terrain, where love and generosity are being reconsidered; passes through a moment of clarity and self-recognition at the cazimi; and ends deep in Martial territory, where what has been learned must be acted on, defended or cut away. The final days before November 13 are not the gentle tail of the retrograde. They are its hardest edge – sharpened further by Mercury’s close square to Pluto at the station.
The shift of sect: evening star to morning star
Mercury is the one planet that has no fixed sect; it takes its character from its phase. Ptolemy notes that the planets are counted masculine when they rise as morning stars and feminine as evening stars. Mercury began this retrograde as an evening star, trailing after the Sun into the night – nocturnal, receptive, inward. At the cazimi on November 4 it passes between the Earth and the Sun and is reborn as a morning star, rising before dawn – diurnal, outward, active. The retrograde literally turns Hermes inside out. Before November 4, the work is listening, remembering and uncovering. After it, the work is speaking, deciding and returning to the surface.
Under the beams: the invisible messenger
Within days of the station, Mercury slips under the Sun’s beams and disappears from the sky, not to re-emerge until after it turns direct. Hellenistic astrologers treated a planet under the beams as hidden – its significations operating out of sight, in secret, behind the scenes. There could hardly be a more Scorpionic image: the messenger of the gods walking in darkness, carrying a message nobody else can read yet. Expect conversations that happen in private, secret rituals held under plain sight, decisions made behind closed doors, and information that circulates long before it becomes public.
Venus Retrograde: The Second Voice
Mercury retrograde on its own asks what did you say, and what did you mean? Venus retrograde asks what do you want, and what is it worth? Running together, they bring back ex-lovers with something to explain, money that was owed and never paid, creative projects abandoned at the halfway mark, and agreements made on charm rather than substance. Venus slips back into her own sign of Libra on October 25, so love and value are reviewed through the lens of fairness and contracts, while Mercury digs through the Scorpionic basement of debts, secrets and shared resources. When both turn direct on November 13–14, the verdicts arrive together: the relationship, the deal, the price.
Ptolemy’s Rules and the Mundane Sky
In Ptolemy’s mundane astrology, Mercury is the shape-shifter: it takes on the nature of whatever planet it is joined with or ruled by. Benefically placed, it governs trade, learning, contracts and clever invention; afflicted, it leans toward fraud, theft, piracy and sudden reversals. Paired with Mars – as it is here, by rulership and by square – Ptolemy’s combinations push those themes toward raids, quarrels and violence of speech. Scorpio adds its own vocabulary: debt, inheritance, taxation, insurance, intelligence services, investigations and everything that is concealed.
Taken together, the world picture for the next three weeks looks like this:
Secrets surface. A retrograde in Scorpio, under the beams, ending square Pluto, is a textbook signature for leaks, exposés, reopened investigations and documents that resurface at inconvenient moments. Things that were filed away are pulled back out. Expect the period around the direct station on November 13 to be especially revealing.
Money gets recounted. Scorpio’s domain of shared finance – banking, credit, debt, taxation, insurance – is in review. Revised figures, corrected reports, delayed payments and renegotiated terms are all likely. With Venus retrograde alongside, markets in luxury goods, art and anything priced on desire are vulnerable to sharp reassessments. The Full Moon in Taurus on October 26, squared by Pluto, sets the tone early: a public reckoning between what people own and what they owe.
Leaders overplay their hand. With Mars and Jupiter in Leo squaring Mercury, public figures are prone to grand statements, boasts and ultimatums that have to be corrected or walked back. The October 30 Mercury–Mars square is the most combustible day for heated rhetoric, diplomatic friction and public spats.
Systems and surveillance. Mercury’s square to Pluto in Aquarius at the station direct connects the theme of secrets to technology, data and networks. Privacy breaches, data disputes and questions about who controls information are likely to dominate headlines through mid-November.
Old cases, new endings. The New Moon in Scorpio on November 9, falling while Mercury is still retrograde in the same sign, favours closures over beginnings: settlements, verdicts, resignations and the quiet end of matters that have dragged on since the summer.
What the Greeks Knew About a Hidden Hermes
Long before anyone tracked retrograde motion, the Greeks already knew a Hermes who worked underground. As Hermes Chthónios, he was honoured alongside the dead; on the final day of the Anthesteria festival, households offered him a pot of mixed boiled seeds – food for the souls, which the living did not touch. And as Hermes Kátochos, “the one who holds down,” he was one of the gods invoked on lead curse tablets, the katádesmoi, rolled up and dropped into graves and wells to bind a rival’s tongue in court or in love. The underworld Hermes was the god of words that are held – sealed, buried and kept from moving. That is the Hermes of this retrograde.
A secret ancient spell: But Greek folk tradition also kept a kinder memory of him. A lucky find on the road – a coin in the dust, something lost and recovered – was called a hérmaion, a gift of Hermes. The same word named the heaps of stones by roadsides and at crossroads, sacred to the god, where every passing traveller added a pebble. And when two companions found something together, the one who did not pick it up would say koinós Hermês – “Hermes is shared” – to claim a part of it. Retrogrades are when lost things come back. The tradition says: when they do, share the luck.
A Simple Practice: The Stone of Hermes
A modern practice inspired by the roadside hermaia. Begin on the cazimi, Wednesday, November 4 – Mercury’s own day – or on any day of the retrograde.
- Find a smooth pebble on a path you walk often. Hold it in your left hand and speak into it, quietly, the words you have left unsaid – or the question you want answered before the retrograde ends.
- Carry the stone with you, or keep it at your threshold, until Mercury turns direct on November 13.
- On the day of the station, take it to a crossroads, a boundary stone or an existing cairn and add it to the heap, saying: “Hermes of the roads, carry it back to the light.”
- When something lost returns to you in the weeks that follow – a message, money, a person, an idea – share a part of it with someone else. Koinós Hermês.
Retrograde Rules for Scorpio Season
Do
- Reread contracts, loan terms and joint-finance paperwork
- Finish, edit and rewrite rather than launch
- Have the conversation you have been avoiding, in person
- Research, investigate, ask for second opinions
- Back up your files and confirm every booking
Don’t
- Sign major new financial or legal commitments if you can wait
- Send the message you wrote at 2 a.m., especially around October 30
- Mistake nostalgia for destiny when an ex reappears
- Share a secret that was entrusted to you
- Assume November 13 is the finish line, the shadow runs to November 29–30
Who Is Favoured, Who Is Challenged
Because this retrograde never leaves Scorpio, its pressure falls hardest on the fixed signs: Scorpio, which hosts it; Taurus, which opposes it; Leo, where Mars and Jupiter square it; and Aquarius, where Pluto receives Mercury’s square at the station direct. The easiest passage belongs to the signs that see Scorpio by trine and sextile, and above all to the one for whom Scorpio is the house of the Sun god. Also challenged are the Zodiac Signs ruled by Mercury – Gemini and Virgo.
Most Challenged: Scorpio
The entire retrograde takes place in your first house – your body, your image, your sense of self – during your own birthday season, after Venus also began her retrograde in your sign. Every word you say is amplified, every silence is misread, and old versions of yourself come back to be faced. The reward is real: the November 4 cazimi happens in your sign, which can make it one of the most clarifying days of your year.
Also challenged: Leo (family and home, under the Mars–Jupiter square), Taurus (partnerships, with the Full Moon in your sign) and Aquarius (career, with Pluto in your sign squared at the station).
Most Favoured: Pisces
For Pisces, Scorpio is the ninth house – the place the Hellenistic astrologers called Theós, “God,” the joy of the Sun. Mercury’s rebirth in the heart of the Sun happens here. Study, spiritual practice, writing, publishing, legal appeals and returning to places and teachers from your past are all blessed. A retrograde in a fellow water sign speaks your native language: intuition and research finally agree.
Also favoured: Capricorn (the eleventh house, the Good Spirit – old friends and allies return) and Cancer (the fifth house, Good Fortune – creative work revived, though romance needs care with Venus retrograde).
Mercury Retrograde in Scorpio for Every Sign
Read for your Sun sign, and then for your Rising sign – the Rising sign will usually describe the area of life more precisely. The house noted for each sign is where Scorpio falls in a whole-sign chart; the houses Mercury rules tell you where the messages come from.
Aries
Your own ruler, Mars, is the lord of this whole retrograde, so you will feel it as a test of your temper as much as your paperwork. Scorpio is your eighth house: joint finances, loans, taxes, insurance, inheritance and the vulnerable side of intimacy. Expect a forgotten payment, a refund, a partner’s spending or the fine print of a loan to resurface. Mercury rules your third and sixth houses, so the trouble tends to arrive through messages and through your daily work. October 30, when Mercury squares Mars, is the day to keep your phone in your pocket – a heated exchange about money or loyalty could say more than you mean. Settle old debts, reread agreements and resist new joint commitments. By November 13 you will know exactly who is invested in you, and who was only borrowing. Read your Sun Sign and your Rising Sign? Taurus
Mercury retrogrades directly opposite your sign while your ruler, Venus, is retrograde too – and on October 26 the Full Moon falls in Taurus, squared by Pluto. Relationships are under the brightest light of the year. Scorpio is your seventh house of partners, open rivals and contracts, and Mercury rules your second house of money and your fifth of romance, so conversations about love and money blur together. An ex may reappear, a business partner may want to renegotiate, and a relationship may ask you to say out loud what you have been quietly tolerating. This is a season for renegotiation, not for proposals or new partnership agreements. Listen more than you argue. When Mercury and Venus turn direct together on November 13–14, the relationship question reaches its answer. Read your Sun Sign and your Rising Sign? Find your Rising here for Free!
Gemini
Your ruling planet is the one walking backward, and it is doing so in your sixth house of daily work, routines, coworkers, technology and health. Expect schedule changes, glitching devices, a misunderstood instruction at work and tasks you thought were finished coming back for another round. Mercury also rules your first and fourth houses, so your energy levels and home life feed directly into how well your days run. The retrograde is excellent for rebuilding a routine you abandoned and for finally investigating that niggling issue with a professional – reschedule appointments rather than skip them. Watch your tongue with colleagues on October 30. Around the station direct on November 13, Uranus in your own sign stirs up a sudden adjustment; welcome it, because it is the shortcut you were looking for. Read your Sun Sign and your Rising Sign? Cancer
Scorpio is your fifth house, the place the old astrologers called Good Fortune, and a fellow water sign gives you an easy, flowing trine. The creative project you put down in the summer – the manuscript, the art, the shop idea – comes back asking to be finished, and it is worth finishing. Mercury rules your third and twelfth houses, so messages arrive from the past and from hidden places: a text from someone you have not heard from in years, a memory that suddenly makes sense. Romance is sweet but complicated with Venus retrograde; ask yourself whether you miss the person or the version of yourself you were with them. Matters involving children may need a second conversation. The November 4 cazimi brings a genuine moment of joy or inspiration, write it down. Read your Sun Sign and your Rising Sign? Leo
Mars and Jupiter are both in your sign, and both square the retrograde – which means your fire is the force overcoming Mercury from above. Scorpio is your fourth house: home, family, property and the private self. Old family dynamics surface, a household repair or move is delayed, and a family secret or unspoken grievance may finally be voiced. Mercury rules your second and eleventh houses, so money and friendships get tangled into domestic matters. Your instinct will be to lead, decide and fix everything loudly; this retrograde rewards the opposite. Repair rather than renovate. Listen to the elders’ stories. Do not send the message to the family group chat on October 30. When Mars meets Jupiter in your sign on November 15, you will have both the clarity and the courage to act. Virgo
This retrograde lands in the most classically “Mercury retrograde” corner of your chart: the third house of messages, paperwork, siblings, neighbours, short journeys and vehicles. Misdirected emails, crossed wires with a sibling and car trouble are all on the menu, so back up your files, confirm addresses and leave extra time for travel. But your ruler is the planet doing the reviewing, and nobody edits like you do. This is one of your best periods of the year for rewriting, proofreading, research and returning to a piece of writing you gave up on. Mercury also rules your first and tenth houses, so the conversations you have now shape your reputation and your career direction. A long-avoided talk with a brother, sister or close neighbour finally happens – and clears the air. Read your Sun Sign and your Rising Sign? Find your Rising here for Free!
Libra
You are working a double shift. On October 25 your ruler, Venus, retrogrades back into your own sign, while Mercury retrogrades through Scorpio, your second house of income, possessions and self-worth. Expect refunds, missing payments, a forgotten account, or an invoice that needs chasing. Mercury rules your ninth and twelfth houses, so money matters may involve something foreign, legal or hidden from view. Big purchases – especially electronics and luxury items – are better left until after November 13. The deeper work here is about value: what you charge, what you tolerate, and whether your prices reflect what you are actually worth. When Mercury and Venus station direct together, your finances and your self-image move forward as one. Name your number before then. Read your Sun Sign and your Rising Sign? Scorpio
This is your retrograde. Mercury walks backward through your first house for its entire course, during your birthday season, after Venus also began her retrograde in your sign. People will misread your silences and replay your words back to you; you may find yourself reconsidering your appearance, your image, or the story you tell about who you are. Mercury rules your eighth and eleventh houses, so shared money and friendships are tangled into every identity question. If your solar return falls inside these dates, plan the celebration but delay big launches until after November 13 – or better, until the shadow clears at the end of the month. The November 4 cazimi happens in your sign, and the New Moon on November 9 follows it: a rare chance to be reborn on your own terms. Plant the intention now; act on it in December. Sagittarius
Scorpio is your twelfth house, the house of what is hidden, and Mercury rules your seventh and tenth houses – so both your partnerships and your career are operating behind a veil for the next three weeks. Something is being discussed at work that you are not yet part of, or a partner is keeping a private struggle to themselves. Your dreams will be vivid and strangely informative; keep a notebook by the bed. This is a superb period for retreat, rest, therapy, spiritual practice and quietly closing old chapters. Your ruler, Jupiter, squares the retrograde from Leo, tempting you to overpromise and over-share – hold back. As the Sun enters your sign on November 22, inside the post-shadow, you re-emerge with the inside story everyone else missed. Read your Sun Sign and your Rising Sign? Find your Rising here for Free!
Capricorn
For you, Scorpio is the eleventh house – the Good Spirit, the joy of Jupiter, the house of friends, allies, communities and long-held hopes. A retrograde here is a season of reunions. Former colleagues, past clients and old friends reappear with opportunities, and an ambition you shelved years ago comes back looking newly possible. Mercury rules your sixth and ninth houses, so the reconnections tend to involve work, study or travel. Social media needs a light touch: draft, reread and delete before you post. Your ruler Saturn is retrograde in Aries, reviewing home and foundations at the same time, so you are rebuilding your network and your base together. Reach out first – the door you knock on during this retrograde opens more easily than any new one. Read your Sun Sign and your Rising Sign? Find your Rising here for Free!
Aquarius
The retrograde moves through your tenth house of career, reputation and public standing, and it ends with a close square to Pluto in your own sign on November 13. Earlier, on October 26, the Sun squares Pluto too. Expect a power negotiation with a boss, a client or an institution, and some reshuffling of plans you thought were settled. Mercury rules your fifth and eighth houses, so creative work and shared money are tied to your professional story. An old job offer or project may return; a promotion may be delayed rather than denied. Guard your reputation carefully – private information has a way of going public under Scorpio and Pluto. With Mars and Jupiter in Leo, your seventh house, partners are pushing loudly. Document everything, and let your work speak before your words do. Read your Sun Sign and your Rising Sign? Pisces
You have the best seat in the house. Scorpio is your ninth house – the place of God and the joy of the Sun – and Mercury’s rebirth in the heart of the Sun on November 4 happens right here. This is the retrograde for going back to school, returning to a spiritual teacher or tradition, reworking a manuscript, appealing a legal decision or revisiting a place abroad that left its mark on you. Mercury rules your fourth and seventh houses, so home and partnership are woven into your search for meaning. Travel may bring delays, so confirm every booking, but journeys of return are blessed. The deep, investigative tone of Scorpio and your own intuition finally speak the same language. Trust the insight that arrives quietly – it is the truest thing you will hear all autumn. Out of the Underworld
Every Mercury retrograde is a small descent, but this one is the real thing: Hermes walking down into the house of Ares, under the beams of the Sun, with Venus beside him. It is not a season to fear. In the myths, Hermes is the one god who always comes back up – the only Olympian who can enter Hades and leave again. He brings Persephone home. He leads the souls where they need to go. What he carries back from the dark is never quite what went down with him.
So let the old messages arrive. Let the buried conversations happen. Let the money be recounted and the promises reread. By the time Mercury clears its shadow at the end of November, you will be standing on firmer ground than you are today – and whatever lost thing has found its way back to you, remember the old words of the road: koinós Hermês. Share the luck.
