It is again this time of the year when the Sun enters Libra, where the realm of Water is celebrating and the Magic of the Autumn Equinox begins.
Autumn Equinox and the Harvest
Traditionally the Autumn Equinox (also known as Mabon – click here to read more about the Reign of Water) was a celebration of the harvest which has been completed and the preservation of food started to taking place as the winter slowly approaches and Mother Earth begins to regenerate.

Grains of the last harvest were traditionally used in Mabon, baked in honey cakes and other treats in order to honor the Spirits of Nature and the Gods for providing and nourishing all living things. Seasonal fruits like apples that have been recently harvested were also used as offerings and blessings were sent to Mother Earth for her provisions. The Autumn Equinox is traditionally the time to give gifts, share Nature”s blessings and thank the Divine. Magical Recipes Online recommends the following adapted list of herbs of druidic origin as an incense for your ceremonial pyre during the Autumn Equinox:
- Acorn
- apple
- benzoin
- cedar
- cloves
- fern
- frankincense
- grains
- hazel
- honeysuckle
- marigold
- milkweed
- myrrh
- passionflower
- patchouli
- rose
- sage
- thistle
the Magical Recipe for Mabon
A sample incense can be the following:
- 1 part benzoin
- 1 part cedar
- 1 part sage
- 1/2 part honeysuckle
- 1/2 part passionflower
- 1/2 part rose
- 1/2 part marigold
- 1/2 part thistle
- 3 drops of patchouli
Pieces of dried apple or apple skin
Feel free to use any of the above ingredients, however I consider that the combination of benzoin, cedar and patchouli will give you that otherwordly watery scent that you wish for combined with flowery scents will send your mind in heavens.
